Jim Machacek has been creating artworks in printmaking, artists’ books, drawing and collage for four decades. His artwork has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries nationwide and in international exhibitions in Japan, Mexico, Canada and Hungary (see resume for complete list). His artists’ books are represented in over 50 university and special collections including the Library of Congress, London’s Tate Museum Research Center, NYC Public Library, UCLA, USC, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library La Jolla, SDSU, Brown, Stanford, Yale, and the University of Iowa. He holds a MFA in printmaking from C.W. Post/Long Island University, a BFA from Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and a BA in journalism from Creighton University.

Jim has lived in San Diego since 1984 and taught for 32 years in the art department at San Diego Mesa College educating a generation of printmakers and co-founded Mesa Arts Press to promote the art of fine printing in the production of artists’ books, prints, and ephemera. Other teaching appointments include UC San Diego Extension, Athenaeum School of the Arts, Southwestern College and Boston Museum School. From 2000 to 2017, Jim was co–founder and master printer at Bay Park Press, a San Diego fine art press and collaborative print studio. He is a member of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, the Center for Book Arts in New York and San Diego Book Arts.
